Ghana have sacked coach Chris Hughton after their group-stage exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana has terminated the contract of coach Chris Hughton following their premature exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars concluded their Group B campaign with two points, securing 2-2 draws against both Egypt and Mozambique after a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their tournament opener.

Despite holding distant hopes of advancing as one of the top four third-placed teams, Ghana's aspirations were dashed on Tuesday when results didn't favor them.

Hughton, who took on the role of Ghana's head coach in February the previous year, saw his tenure abruptly end.

"Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect," stated the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a release.

"The executive council has also decided to disband the technical team of the Black Stars.

"In the upcoming days, the GFA will outline a roadmap for the future direction of the Black Stars."

Former manager of Newcastle United and Brighton, Hughton assumed the position of technical advisor for the four-time continental champions in February 2022, succeeding Otto Addo after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana finished at the bottom of Group H with one victory from three matches.

Ghana's disappointments in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and the subsequent edition in Ivory Coast preceded their latest elimination.

The GFA expressed full support for Hughton, despite a reported "verbal altercation" between the coach and a fan following the team's unexpected loss to Cape Verde.

Initially, it seemed that the 65-year-old would lead the Black Stars to the knockout stage, with Ghana holding a 2-0 advantage over Mozambique in their final group match.

However, Mozambique scored twice during stoppage time in the second half to secure a surprising draw, sealing Ghana's departure from the tournament.

Under Hughton's guidance, the West African team experienced a mixed start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, clinching a victory against Madagascar with a stoppage-time goal before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Comoros.
